It was an incredible conference this past weekend at the Royal Ontario Museum and the Royal Conservatory of Music.  The venues and the location reminded me why I love Toronto so much!  What a privilege to join together to worship God in one of the key cultural areas of this great city.

Each musician, leader and speaker brought a fresh picture of the beautiful and timeless truth that God has for us today, given so very long ago. The backdrop of the Dead Sea Scrolls exhibit and wealth information laid out for us about the scrolls, brought a fascinating reminder of the reality of God's infallible word.  I heard someone say that they love the thought that God hid those scrolls for all of those thousands of years, only to bring them to light to our generation.  What a gift, and a testimony of God's never failing truth!

A highlight of the weekend for me, however, was a surprise guest.  It was a young man who was simply there at the ROM to attend and enjoy the conference.  Stopping by at the Compassion table on Saturday, he asked for assistance to sponsor a child from his homeland: the Philippines. Moments later he mentioned that as a child, he had also been a Compassion sponsored child.  Hearing that, excited the team member from Compassion.... and soon after, she shared it with all of us.

His story went something like this:

Manuel was the 9th child in his extremely poor family, growing up in a village in the Philippines.  They had no electricity, running water or shoes.  A missionary from Australia came to the neighbouring village, looking for children to place in the Compassion program - children who were from very needy, poor families.  Manuel  was chosen and entered into the Compassion International sponsorship program.  Soon after, someone began to sponsor him, and his life dramatically changed.  In an interview, he was asked how his life was different after he was sponsored, compared to how it was beforehand.

He put the microphone up to his mouth, and as he humbly looked down at his feet, he said:  "I got shoes."

Along with the rest of the audience, I made an audible sound of joy for him - such a small thing as shoes, was obviously a big gift in his life as a boy.

He continued.  "And I also got a guitar."

Now the audience clapped - and I began to cry.  His gentle spirit and shy smile beamed from the stage.  He was the real thing.  He was living proof that a small amount of money, and a large amount of love in the name of Jesus could dramatically change a life and break the cycle of poverty and hopelessness.  I was struck with awe at the way God can use us to reach children around the world, and the tears continued to flow down my cheeks.

Manuel continued to tell us his story.  He, and others in his family became Christians, and a number of years ago he was sponsored to come and live in Canada.  Here in Canada he met a young woman who later became his wife.  She too was a former Compassion sponsored child from the Philippines.  Together they have three boys, two of whom join with Manuel playing guitar in the worship band at his church in Toronto.

The real thing.  Compassion delivers Jesus' love, and our money and letters to children all over the world like they did for Manuel, giving them the opportunity to live more full, free lives. What a wonderful surprise and privilege for those of us at the conference to meet Manuel and hear once again, in a very personal way, how our loving heavenly Father watches over His children.  Manuel's life is proof.

Sometimes it's just good to look around as people walk by - - and wonder who they are, where they've come from and where they're going - - and to pray that perhaps my life can touch one of those people with the love of Jesus.

Today I stumbled across a video on VIMEO - - it says a lot about people - - how they dream, how they hope, and how they want to be happy.  It may not be a complex or overly creative video, in fact it's just a bunch of people looking into a camera, answering one simple question.  Watch it, and I'm pretty sure you'll be uplifted, smile, and maybe even wish you could reach out and help one or two of the people you meet in the video to realize their dream come true.

What's the question they're answering?  Listen for yourself.

Now that the entire team is back in the office, we're all focusing on the days ahead.  So much to do, and so much to look forward to!

It’s exciting to watch the tickets sell out in almost every city for the “Chris Tomlin – Hello Love” tour.  It’s obvious that a lot of people love Chris’s music and are eager to join him for a night of worship.  So many of us have been singing Chris’s songs at church (and in our cars and homes) for many years.  They’re the kind of anthems that echo over and over again in our heads long after the music stops.  They’re the kind of anthems that proclaim such loud, beautiful truths about our powerful, loving God.  It’s going to be fantastic to be together in just over a week worshiping Jesus as Chris leads us.

Joining Chris on this tour is Kristian Stanfill - be sure you get to know his songs.  He’s a worship leader from Atlanta and has recently released a new CD – Attention.  Visit Kristian’s MySpace and listen to some of the seven songs/clips available there.  You’ll be glad you did.

If you live near any of the cities on the Chris Tomlin tour we hope you’ll be able to be a part of an incredible evening of lifting our voices to our wonderful Lord!

It’s back-to-school season. Maybe it’s your first time to send a little one to school; or perhaps lots of kids walk out your door on their way to the bus stop; or maybe you are going back to class again. It may even be the first year you’re not sending someone to school, or not returning again yourself. Whether in the classroom or not, everyone agrees that we never stop learning, and we never stop being students of life.

An amazing and unique learning opportunity is ready for you at the Royal Ontario Museum. Plan to make room in your calendar to take part in the Unite In Worship Conference, in Toronto, weaving together the intricate history of our faith with one of the most important discoveries of all time: the Dead Sea Scrolls.

Begin to open up the world of the Scrolls more clearly by visiting the Royal Ontario Museum’s website to get a glimpse of what they are offering during this exciting exhibit. You may also want to take a bit of time to watch an informative short movie at the Israel Antiquities Authority website to begin to understand this important archaeological discovery.

Those are a few ways to get a head start before the conference and pique your interest… but no matter how you choose to learn, we’d love for you to join us at the conference with expert guest speakers, and amazing worship leaders. It’s all available at this website. We hope to see you then!

It’s worth highlighting a recent announcement – although many may already know:  Steven Curtis Chapman announced the release of a new CD, coming this fall.

The best way to hear about it is from Steven himself… while sharing from the new and incredibly beautiful and miraculous “Maria’s Big House of Hope” in China, named in honour of his beloved little girl Maria who passed away more than a year ago…

Australia -- the land down-under, and an exhausting17+-hour-flight-away -- seems to have a sort of magical appeal.  Other than being the land of kangaroos, koalas, surfing and sun, Sydney Australia is home to Hillsong Church and College.  The young men and women of Hillsong United have found a special place in many of our hearts, and have a huge following here in Canada.

A few other friends we’ve come to know from Hillsong church have recently left sunny Sydney and moved to the Toronto area. After serving on staff at Hillsong for 10 years, Julie and Damian are answering God’s call on their lives to live here and start a church….and several of their friends have come along to join in the fun! We have heard their vision and are amazed at their courage and faith.  We want to pass along the news of their new local church family as they busily get ready for opening day.  Vantage Church is ready to launch in just a few weeks; follow their blog, and perhaps you even live close enough to visit them.

Many of you who live elsewhere are also busy at work in your community.  No matter where you find yourself in your local church - whether the church is young or old, big or small - be encouraged to continue to live following Jesus with all your heart. Just like the word vantage church has chosen as their name, we can all have a good vantage point, or view of what God is doing, if we only look around. It is clear to see God is working through His people all over the world!

A small group of people had the privilege of sitting in on some pretty great workshops during Christian Heritage Day on June 6th.

One of those leading a workshop was Tom Davis – author, communicator, missionary, father, ….  to name just a few of the many hats he wears.   He has become familiar to me over the past few years through his websites and books.  He travels extensively to follow His God-given passion to care for orphans, finding the neediest places and then making their needs known.  Tom has seen kids and entire orphanages sponsored through loving individuals and local churches.  Incredible.

One of his most recent projects was his first novel: Scared.  After receiving it in my hands, I began reading and just couldn’t put it down.  Beautiful, tragic and gripping are a few words that come to mind to describe this story that pulls at both your heart and soul.  I highly recommend his book and when you’re done with it, pass it on…. it will challenge and invite response from many of us that may dramatically change lives.

Wow.
What an incredible day we all had at Ontario Place last Saturday!

God gave us a beautiful blue sky, warm sunshine and soft breezes from the lake – perfect.  The red cheeks on faces Saturday evening were plentiful, along with the energy and expectancy as thousands gathered to sing and worship in the Molson Amphitheatre.

It would be so great to hear back from some of you who were there enjoying the entire day at Ontario Place, or perhaps standing in line all day to grab seats for the evening at Molson Amphitheatre.  To leave a comment, simply click on “read more” at the bottom of this blog…

A huge THANK YOU to all who came! You showed courtesy and respect, and were true examples of the love of Jesus during your fun-filled day.  Thanks for making Christian Heritage day a big success again!

we look forward to hearing from some of you...

God of This City is an incredible song declaring God's work and goodness in our lives and in our cities. The song was born in the hearts of the members of Bluetree a band from Belfast, Northern Ireland. Listen to Aaron Boyd talk about remarkable story behind the song - -

What a privilege we will have this Saturday to join Bluetree as they lead us in worship from the stage at the Molson Amphitheatre. We hope many of you will be able to join us for an awesome day of music, teaching and fun at Christian Heritage Day at Ontario Place, together declaring God is Lord of the city of Toronto, and of your city, no matter where you live...

...hope to see you there!
